Spearfishing is an exhilarating discipline that allows individuals to hunt and fish while exploring the underwater world. While this fishing technique is one of the oldest in existence, it often raises many questions for beginners. If underwater hunting intrigues you and you wish to learn more, this guide provides essential tips for getting started, along with an introduction to the essential equipment for spearfishing: the speargun or spear gun. Let’s dive in!

What is Spearfishing?

Spearfishing has been practiced globally for thousands of years. It is an ancient fishing method that involves capturing fish underwater using a pointed object. The earliest underwater hunts were conducted with a spear, similar to terrestrial hunting. Over time, techniques have evolved, and today, spearfishing is primarily done using a speargun or spear gun. In essence, spearfishing combines three disciplines: fishing, hunting, and freediving.

For those new to spearfishing, it is crucial to familiarize oneself with the techniques and safety rules. A speargun is a lethal weapon! Underwater, one must remain calm, avoid startling fish, and move as naturally and discreetly as possible.

5 Tips for Getting Started

  1. It is ideal to be accompanied by a friend who can help you develop the right reflexes and explain safety rules. Additionally, they may lend you equipment to try the sport before making an investment.
  2. One must not fear water or underwater environments and should be a proficient swimmer. Freediving is a discipline that requires training. Start by practicing breath-holding in a pool, both statically and while moving. Begin with snorkeling in the ocean to build your breath-holding skills.
  3. Consult a physician to ensure there are no contraindications, as this is a demanding sport. Joining a club or federation will provide guidance on techniques and the best fishing spots.
  4. Subscribe to a specialized magazine or search online to learn about the best spearfishing practices, as well as fish species and their habits.
  5. Allocate a budget for your equipment. Quality gear is essential and requires a reasonable investment!

Essential Equipment

To equip yourself properly, you will need:

  • A wetsuit suitable for the conditions of your fishing spot;
  • A mask and snorkel;
  • Fins;
  • A good spearfishing knife;
  • Spearfishing gloves;
  • A speargun.

What is a Speargun?

A speargun, or “underwater hunting crossbow,” is a weapon designed to propel a spear toward a fish for capture. The spear tip typically features barbs to prevent it from escaping once it strikes the target.

Components of a Speargun:

(A) The stock, which allows for manipulation of the speargun. It should be ergonomic for comfortable handling.

(B) The reel. This is optional (see the next section).

(C) The barrel or tube. It can be made of aluminum, wood, fiberglass, or carbon. Beginners should opt for aluminum due to its cost-effectiveness and functionality. Experienced fishermen may prefer fiberglass or carbon for their strength and lightweight properties.

(D) The elastic band. This rubber cable provides propulsion for the spear. Thicker bands yield more power, and some spearguns allow a second band for increased force.

(E) The spear. The fundamental component, enabling you to catch fish. Its length and format depend on the speargun and fishing style.

Spearguns can feature two types of propulsion: elastic or pneumatic.

  • Elastic spearguns use a rubber band to propel the spear and are the most commonly used globally.
  • Pneumatic spearguns use compressed air to propel the spear. These require a pump and loading mechanism and are prohibited in many locations.

Why Do Some Spearguns Have Reels?

Reels should be avoided by beginners, as they add weight and reduce mobility. However, experienced divers targeting larger fish (e.g., grouper, snapper, or barracuda) may find a reel useful to tire the fish and prevent accidents if the fish pulls the spear.

Spearfishing is highly regulated, so research local laws before diving. Consult experienced fishermen or local clubs for advice. Understand that spearfishing is a comprehensive sport requiring physical fitness. Early outings may not yield large catches, but practice improves technique and breath-holding for better results over time!
