Choosing the Mask and Snorkel for Spearfishing

When selecting a spearfishing mask, the primary criterion to consider is ergonomics. A suitable mask should facilitate equalization, not compress the face, and provide an optimal field of vision. It consists of a skirt (made from rubber, silicone, or PVC) and a strap to secure it to the face.

Spearfishing masks are characterized by their low volume, which means less air inside. Consequently, the diver must equalize pressure more frequently but with less intensity.

Standard models include the Focus by Cressi, the Alien by Omersub, the E-Visio by Epsealon, and options from Mares.

To determine the right mask size, place the mask against the face without securing the strap, then inhale through the nose. If the mask remains flush against the face, it is the correct size.

Regarding the snorkel, choose the model that best suits your needs. Simplicity is key. Snorkels can be rigid or flexible. Opt for a snorkel that fits your morphology and age (snorkel lengths may vary based on age).
