When starting out in spearfishing, learning how to properly load a speargun can be challenging. Mastering this skill is essential for both safety and effectiveness!

How to Load a Speargun for Spearfishing

Loading a speargun can be difficult for beginners. Here are some tips to make the process easier and safer:

  1. Ensure there are no knots in the line and that your spear is properly attached.
  2. Position the spear in the spear guide.
  3. Slide the spear into the mechanism and ensure it is securely locked. A “click” sound indicates correct engagement.

  • Clear the line using the designated fins to avoid hindering the loading and stretching of the bands.
  • Engage the safety of the band speargun.

  • Position the butt of the speargun against your sternum. On neoprene wetsuits, a reinforced section helps with this. For longer spearguns, press it against the front of your hip for easier access to the bands.
  • Pull both bands simultaneously until the spear engages with the trigger mechanism.

The intermediate notch serves as a transition point to reach the furthest position.

If you find loading the spear too difficult, consider using the innovative Miceli spear clamp.

Safety Rules for Loading a Speargun

Safety must always come first when practicing spearfishing. Here are essential rules when loading a speargun:

  1. Never load your speargun out of the water. If it were to fire, the spear could ricochet and cause injury.
  2. Ensure no one is in front of you while loading.
  3. Always point your speargun towards the bottom while loading.
  4. Wear gloves to protect your hands during band stretching.
  5. Always load the speargun with the safety engaged.
