A spearfisher narrowly escapes tragedy!
Damien Olsen, a young Australian spearfisher, was writing a message on his phone when a loaded speargun went off and literally drove a one-meter steel shaft into his chest.
When the incident happened, the fisherman kept on writing his message. At that moment, Damien, 22, had not realized what had just happened to him. Miraculously, the shaft did not hit his vital organs.
His friends immediately told him not to move and directly called emergency services. He and his friends were then 400 meters off the coast of Great Keppel Island, on the way to his 7th spearfishing trip.
After being taken care of by medical services, the shaft was successfully removed. The young man is currently recovering from two broken ribs and some scars, after spending more than two weeks in convalescence in Brisbane.
He told a local newspaper: “I know that the golden rule in spearfishing is to never have a loaded speargun on a boat.”
An incident that will certainly not prevent him from going out again for other spearfishing trips.
