Diving in Florida I have swum with hundreds (thous Diving in Florida I have swum with hundreds (thousands?) of Goliath groupers. They are everywhere every wreck and large reef has at least one, often more than that.

So, I got a chance to take one legally and I took one.

Couple days we swam around in green milk, very disappointing.
Trying to dive on spots 80 feet deep when you hit straight brown water on the way down, its terrible. Sometimes you can hear fish thumping around you, but you can’t see them. Some spots it hard to see the end of my gun.

1 day we ran extra far and pulled up on some inshore rocks, and it was top to bottom vis!

We pulled up on this spot in around 80-85 feet, the sounder was in fathoms so quick math was involved.

Sounder shows ball of fish 30 feet + tall, starting maybe 20-30 feet down. I assumed it was jacks or something.

I hit the water and see the fish and it cubera snapper, all cubera snapper all the way down.
So, I dive through the school, passing the 10-15# fish at the top, the deeper I go the bigger the fish get.

Above the murk layer I am passing on 30#+ plus fish and see the “crocodiles” in the murk. Captain calls the biggest snapper crocodiles, seems like a good name for them.

Seeing these profiles with what look like 2-foot-tall tails moving around down there. These are like 60-70# fish. I look at my little orange reef gun with a single wrap on it, this might not work.
I go up and call for the boat, I grab a big gun with a float line and after some maneuverings get back on the spot.

I dive down into the school, they are spread out a bit now because a couple have been shot but they are still pretty thick.

I got down into the murk layer, I am tracking a huge fish but I can’t really tell where his head is so I don’t take the shot. Another goes by but can’t swing the gun fast enough.

I am about out of bottom time and this big silhouette comes out of the murk, I recognize the pec fins right away and know what it is.

I sink the 8.5 shaft into its forehead … Stone shot … Nope it takes off, the double wrap of mono gets caught in the bands, so my gun is going with it. I grabbed the floatline, I can’t even show it down. @inkandboater

So first day into our trip we were greeted with hu So first day into our trip we were greeted with huge rain storms and white water inshore. I guess this is dry season but not for us. We were also told there are no sharks because of longlining, we found that not to 100% accurate.

We went offshore in search of tuna and wahoo and saw pretty much everything but. Bluewater is always a gamble so that’s life.

We tried to get some big snappers on these high spots, the vis was pretty much a brown out at 40-50 feet. And that was 30 miles offshore.

There was the craziest variety of jellyfish and invertebrates in the water.  Some looked like ribbons with flashing dots in the middle. Jellyfish that swim around chasing things.

We got on this one spot and were marking fish around 70 feet, as soon as we hit the water a marlin swam by and then a wahoo in the distance.

A school of crevalle jack came in so I shot one for chum and we started chunking.  The next drift we had the jacks come up again, so I shot another one. This ball of snapper came up and I was stuck fighting this stupid jack.

Then this big bull shark came flying up at the murk cutting through the snapper and crevelles. I was thinking yeah this is going suck, but he ended up turning away.

So the next drift we started chunking again and everyone started diving closer together. The jacks came up, the shark came up, the snapper came up. So I shot one.  It fought like a horse, took forever to get him to the surface.

The captain said the big pargo are under the mullet snapper, so I dove through them into the brown. Which was not as fun now that I knew that big tank of a shark was down here somewhere.

I never did see the pargo but then this school of bonito moved in, like acres of them.
After that we headed in.

Then I found out these snapper are basically garbage, so that was cool

Well after a day of bad luck did a bit better toda Well after a day of bad luck did a bit better today. Shot this black at 82 feet and it ran about mile up into a wreck. Would have been a a bad scene but we had @blake.on.a.breath with us so it was no big deal. Being able to do 2÷ minute dives over 100 feet comes in handy.

Then i shot @dennismjamison black on a roll off in 85. I got him in the cheek and he came up easy. Thanks for the fish Dennis.

Seems like forever since i shot a big fish, or may Seems like forever since i shot a big fish, or maybe it was just a week. Anyways it was cold and windy day, took a road trip to visit @inkandboater in the thon. Water was super powdery in the deep and there was no bait so gave up on wahoo quick.

Did some reef diving and got some odds and ends. Then when we were anchored on the roll off i saw this big thing swimming along 10 feet of the bottom. I dove on it quick and when i got close it started to walk away . I was like "NOOO"

Then it turn to see what i was doing. Big mistake on its part. Shot with my reef reel gun and it took all the line in about 20 seconds. Then it towed me like a float.

Ended up going 63#

Back in key west and back diving. Knew this spot w Back in key west and back diving. Knew this spot was going to be good when we first pulled up and there was 1000s of yellow tails and surgeon fish stacked up in around 70 feet of water.

I brought the camera out on a whim and I guess it worked out. Had two wahoo swim up when I had a ph on the end of my shaft like dumbass. We killed them 솧ㅇㄴㅎ햐 so it worked out. @rubbatoe @capt_kody @reef_v @raawra

After too long of a dry spell, finally got in the After too long of a dry spell, finally got in the water and shot some fish. Been in key west since before Christmas and have just been waiting watching the wind and dirty water.
And now right before I have to leave again the weather calms down. Should be out again today but have to actually work at job.
First job I have had in like over 10 years. Now i feel how most of you fags have felt your whole life watching other people go diving.

Couldn't have done it without my wahoo coach @rubbatoe and professional driver @reef_v .

Speaking of feeling how other people feel, I lost a wahoo yesterday. I know its unbelievable, but I guess not diving for four months does take a toll. #keywest #pescasub #freediving #keywest #wahoo #bluewater
